More Than Math The Sensory Side of Dominos

More Than Math The Sensory Side of Dominos

If you’ve been around for a bit then you know one of our favorite learning games is dominos (hello DOMINO and Juliette!).

Domino & Juliette dominos can be played with in the traditional game manner and can also be used for subitizing (that’s a tricky word- more on that here) while working on number recognition. D&J offers a wide variety of suggestions for ways to play with your dominos and printables to use with your little one. All you have to do is grab your phone and scan the QR code on the back of the box for easy access. Hey-oh!

What you might not have realized is that playing with dominos is SO much more than just a game of fun or even a lesson on numbers and matching. It’s a whole sensory surprise! What we mean is that playing with dominos is a visual and auditory sensory experience. Simply standing a single domino on its side and tipping it over ignites the senses if you are on the right surface. Line multiple dominos up on their edges and watch your child react as they knock them down.  Up the STEM factor and explore with different paths and the distance between the dominos, observing how they fall differently and listening to the sounds they make. This is a great activity for your child to work through independently or with the help of an adult depending on their age. Regardless of who sets the track, your little one will love knocking our dominos over again and again (and again!)!
